New 24 Hour Program: Introduction to the Teaching Profession
NJPSA/FEA is pleased to announce it is offering the new 24-Hour Program now required for all Alternate Route candidates who will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (CE). The goal of the program is to provide an overview of the skills and attitudes needed to become a teacher in the state’s diverse classrooms. Candidates seeking the CE must complete a minimum of 24 hours of formal instruction prior to issuance of the CE and as part of the application process. This new requirement became effective on October 31, 2009, for candidates seeking elementary, N-12 subject area, English as a Second Language, and career and technical education CEs.
Course Content
This non-credit course consists of 20 hours of class work and 4 hours of classroom observation in a public school setting. NJPSA/FEA will offer the program in two cohorts from April 2010 to June 2010. Each cohort consists of five 4 hour sessions of class time. Classes will be held at the FEA Conference Center in Monroe Township, NJ, just minutes from Exit 8A off the NJ Turnpike. The following content is included in each session:
- Session 1: Overview of the Teaching Profession and Classroom Management
- Session 2: Assessment Tools and Lesson Planning
- Session 3: Learning Strategies and How to Find a Teaching Position
- Session 4: Diversity in the Classroom and Use of Technology in Instruction
- Session 5: Lesson Planning and Home-School Connection
- Classroom Observation: Each candidate will spend an additional 4 hours in a public school classroom observing teachers and students

When the 24 hour program is successfully completed, students will receive a Certificate of Completion, as required by the NJ Department of Education. This certificate must be included in the CE application packet.

Qualifications
In order to participate in this program, the candidate must minimally:
- Hold a bachelor or master’s degree with degree conferral noted on official transcripts from a regionally accredited four year college or university; or
- A degree (associate or higher) in a vocational area or 4 years of relevant work experience within the last 10 years for Career and Technical Education (CTE) certification.
- Hold a 2.50 grade point average (GPA) when a 4.00 equals an “A” for degrees conferred 8/31/04 or earlier (not applicable for those CTE candidates seeking eligibility through work experience); or
- Hold a 2.75 grade point average (GPA) when a 4.00 equals an “A” for degrees conferred 9/1/04 or later (not applicable for those CTE candidates seeking eligibility through work experience).
